Overview.

Mount Keira is the climb of Wollongong. It rises from the edge of suburbia into subtropical rainforest on the Illawarra escarpment, and it was the big climb of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships road races. The views from the top across Wollongong and out to the Five Islands are among the best on the NSW coast.

The Route.

Roll west from Wollongong Harbour through the CBD, past Wollongong Hospital, and turn right onto Mount Keira Road. The climb begins in earnest above the houses of Gwynneville and Mount Keira. Near the top, the short spur road takes you to the Mount Keira Summit Park lookout. To make a loop, continue south on Harry Graham Drive along the escarpment and descend through Mount Kembla village back to the coast.

What to expect.

  • The first kilometre bites. The early section on the edge of town sits around 10% and is the hardest part of the climb. Don't go out too hard.

  • It eases in the rainforest. Above the Mount Keira Demonstration School the gradient roughly halves to around 4–5%, and you can settle into a rhythm under the tree canopy.

  • The descent is technical. Tight bends, shaded damp corners and leaf litter. Brake before corners and keep your speed in check.

Key points.

  • Ride it as an out-and-back for a quick hit, or the Keira–Kembla loop for a full morning.

  • Cooler and often damp at the top — carry a vest.

  • Weekday mornings are quietest; weekends bring sightseers to the lookout.

  • Mount Pleasant, the short steep 2022 Worlds circuit climb (~1.1 km at ~7.7%), is nearby if you want to add more.

Coffee and food.

Mount Keira Coffee is the Summit Park café at the top; plenty of options back in Wollongong CBD and on Crown Street.
