Overview.

This is the ride on every cyclist's bucket list — the clifftop coast road north of Wollongong, the curving Sea Cliff Bridge suspended over the ocean, and the hang-gliders at Bald Hill. It's one of the most photographed rides in Australia, and it's right on Wollongong's doorstep.

The Route.

Head north from North Wollongong along the coast through Fairy Meadow, Bulli, Thirroul and Austinmer, then onto Lawrence Hargrave Drive through Coledale, Wombarra and Scarborough. Cross the Sea Cliff Bridge, continue through Coalcliff to Stanwell Park, and climb to Bald Hill Lookout. Turn and retrace, or catch the train home from Stanwell Park or Thirroul.

What to expect.

  • Gently rolling to Thirroul, then a series of short climbs and descents along the cliffs.

  • The Sea Cliff Bridge has a separated shared path on the ocean side — slow down for walkers and photographers.

  • The climb from Stanwell Park to Bald Hill is short but steep, with tight bends.

Key points.

  • Traffic: Lawrence Hargrave Drive is narrow and busy with cars and motorbikes on weekends. Ride single file and be visible. Start before 8 am.

  • Rockfalls and closures: check Live Traffic NSW before heading out.

  • Wind: a northerly makes the return quick; a southerly change in the afternoon makes it tough.

Coffee and food.

Thirroul and Austinmer cafés, the Scarborough Hotel for lunch, and the kiosk at Bald Hill.
